English 5: Provide Evidence to Support Opinion / Fact

A. Content Standards

The learner listens critically to different text types; expresses ideas logically in oral and written forms; and demonstrates interest in reading to meet various needs.

B. Performance Standards 

The learner listens critically to news reports and other radio broadcasts and expresses ideas accurately in oral and in written forms; demonstrates confidence in the use of the language to meet everyday needs; and reads independently and gets relevant information from various text types.

Facts and Opinions

Fact and Opinion statement are often combined writing a persuasive essay, when making an advertisement, when giving speech or even when writing a non-fictional text. Its purpose is to persuade and convince the reader or the listener. 


If the reader or listener don’t know the difference between fact and opinion, he/she might have misleading judgment. 
So, to make proper judgment and to decide whether to believe or not the statement, distinguishing the fact and opinion is necessary. 

Distinguishing Fact and Opinion
The ability to distinguish between fact and opinion helps people think for themselves and resist being manipulated by others. Knowing the difference will help you develop your critical thinking and the ability to reason out. 

Providing evidence to support facts and opinions. 
If the purpose in writing or giving speech is to convince people, it is must to provide necessary evidence to persuade them, to make them believe on the statement.

Facts 
1. can be verified with evidence
2. something that is true
3. tells what actually happened 
4. it cannot be changed. 

Example:
1. The sun is the center of our solar system.

2. COVID-19 was first reported from Wuhan, China on December 31, 2019. 

Here are the clues to prove whether the statement is a fact or not. 
1. Time and dates
2. Historical events
3. Numbers and statistics
4. Scientific data
5. Name and places
6. References
7. Documents






Opinion
1. Cannot be verified with evidence
2. it may differ depending on a person’s own belief or judgment
3. one’s ideas, feelings, beliefs, likes or dislikes

Example: 
1. The most enjoyable hobby during quarantine is baking.


2. I believe that smartphones are now necessity and not anymore, a luxury. 


Fact- is a statement that can be proven to be true. This information can be strengthened and supported by any evidence, it is concrete and does not change. Some signal words are confirmed, discovered, according to demonstrated.

Opinion- is a statement that holds an element of belief or personal views or judgment, which cannot be proved true or false. This information tells how someone feels or thinks about something and is strengthened by emotion. The signal words for opinion are claimed, view argued, suspect, believe, thinks.
